NEWPORT – More than 20 New England restaurants will serve up more than 3,000 gallons of clam, seafood and “creative” chowders at the Newport Yachting Center on Saturday, June 7, for the 27th annual Schweppes Great Chowder Cook-Off.
Most of the competitors will be from the Ocean State, including Castle Hill Inn & Resort, The Mooring Seafood Kitchen and Bar, Waterman Grill and 22 Bowen’s Wine Bar & Grille. Votes are cast by attendees throughout the day.

This year’s contest – in addition to more than $9,000 in prize money – features an exciting rivalry, according to Newport Yachting Center Festival Director Mike Martin.
“The Blue Mermaid and Boat House restaurants are having a showdown in the Best Creative category,” he said in a statement today. “Both have won twice in the past, and a third win ensures induction into our Great Chowder Cook-Off Hall of Fame.”
The event is also an opportunity for local charities, which annually raise more than $30,000 at the cook-off, according to Newport Waterfront Festivals.
This year’s event will run from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday, June 7. Tickets are $20. The Schweppes Great Chowder Cook-Off, now in its 27th year, is a production of Newport Waterfront Festivals, a subsidiary of Newport Harbor Corporation.
