GTECH Corp. donated components of a computer lab through its After School Advantage Program at the Channel One Central Falls Ralph J. Holden Community Center.
The fully operational $15,000 computer lab received a fresh coat of paint, eight Dell flat-panel computers, a digital printer, educational software, a projector screen, desks, chairs and inspirational posters. GTECH volunteers worked with the community center to design and assemble the lab. Representatives from GTECH, along with Central Falls Mayor Charles D. Moreau and members of Channel One joined in a ribbon-cutting ceremony to commemorate the opening.
Channel One provides an after-school program for children in kindergarten through the eighth grade. The activities at Channel One focus on academic learning, positive self image, independent thinking, social skills and positive relationships with adults.
“GTECH’s After School Advantage program is designed to help close the digital divide and open the door of opportunity with the latest technology for children who otherwise may not have access to computers,” said Robert Vincent, senior vice president of corporate affairs for GTECH.
The After School Advantage Program is a nationwide program that focuses on providing access to computers and technology to at-risk children in predominantly inner-city communities. The company has now installed 125 computer centers. •
