Historical commission seeks award entries

PROVIDENCE – The R.I. Historical Preservation & Heritage Commission has put out a call for nominations for the Rhode Island State Historic Preservation Awards.
Nominations are due in February 2009.
RIHPHC is also seeking topics for sessions, tours and speakers for its 2009 Rhode Island Preservation Conference, to be held Saturday, April 25, at the University of Rhode Island’s Kingston campus. The 24th annual event is a day-long series of speakers, presentations, panels and workshops. Preservation award winners also will be announced.
In calling for ideas, RIHPHC cited possible topics as: open space, farms, waterfronts, planning, landscapes, technology, sustainability, artistry, design, economics, housing, smart growth, museums, advocacy, policy, neighborhood revitalization and education. However, the commission said, anything will be considered.
“The conference theme is intentionally inclusive; don’t hesitate to suggest a topic, tour or speaker,” the commission said.
The R.I. Historical Preservation & Heritage Commission, as the state office for historic preservation, is responsible for reviewing and submitting nominations from across Rhode Island to the National Register of Historic Properties. Additional information is available at www.preservation.ri.gov.
