Home visiting program resumes after new deal

PROVIDENCE – The R.I. Department of Health has signed a new contract with VNS Home Health Services in Narragansett, part of the South County Hospital Healthcare System, to resume home visiting services for vulnerable infants in the state.
The Family Outreach Program, which serves the families of about 6,000 babies with significant risk factors for early developmental delays, used to be run by the VNA of Care New England in Providence, Kent County and northern Rhode Island, but the VNA discontinued those services on Oct. 1.
VNS Home Health, which already served South County, is expanding its reach into Kent County and has subcontracted with three local agencies to provide services in Providence and Northern Rhode Island, state officials said: Children’s Friend and Service will serve Providence, Central Falls, Pawtucket and East Providence; Meeting Street will serve Providence, Cranston and Johnston. Thundermist Health Center will serve the rest of northern Rhode Island. Visiting Nurse Services of Bristol and Newport Counties will continue to provide services for the East Bay area.
