PROVIDENCE – Homelessness increased 1.7 percent year over year in Rhode Island, according to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s 2017 Annual Homeless Assessment Report.

Communities in Rhode Island reported that 1,180 people experienced homelessness on a single night in 2017.

The report also found that chronic homelessness increased 66.6 percent in the state since 2016, accounting for 240 individuals. Homelessness among families with children increased 25.5 percent year over year to 378 people.

The report also said Rhode Island reported the fifth-lowest percentage of unsheltered homeless individuals in the country at 8.6 percent, accounting for an estimated 69 people.

The number of unaccompanied homeless youth in the state is estimated to be 49.

The Ocean State’s homelessness rate has declined 8 percent from 2010.

“We appreciate the efforts of local housing and service providers in Rhode Island who are on the front lines of helping us battle homelessness,” said David Tille, HUD New England regional administrator, in a statement.  “Together we will continue this fight.”
