Darlene Allen | Adoption Rhode Island CEO and executive director
I have always had a passion for improving the lives of children. I was fortunate to have a loving family where caring for those in need was a value my parents instilled in me. For more than 30 years, I have worked to help children have a chance at a happy childhood. Before coming to Adoption Rhode Island almost 20 years ago, I held numerous leadership positions in child-serving organizations. It remains a privilege to lead an organization with such an unparalleled mission.
We have found adoptive families for thousands of children in Rhode Island’s foster care system and have worked tirelessly to support families that care for these children. We have developed a counseling program for foster and adopted children and have provided healing arts for children across the state. We grant wishes for children, provide holiday gifts, bring children to sporting events and more.
Two of the most important lessons in leadership I have learned along the way are:
n Invest in your workforce. They are the heart and soul of the organization. They bring to life the mission and are critical to the organization’s success. Provide a supportive environment, set high expectations, provide opportunities for professional growth, encourage innovation and let them know how much you value them.
n Identify and develop a strong and engaged board of directors. Engaged, informed and active board members are the organization’s most critical ambassadors, strategists, advocates and supporters. They also bring life to the mission and are critical to the organization’s success.
