IRS warns of online tax-prep scam

WASHINGTON – The Internal Revenue Service says it learned late last week of a new scam that lures taxpayers into filing their financial information on a Web page masquerading as a free tax-return preparation site.
The only place to access the Free File Alliance, the IRS noted, is through the agency’s official Web site www.IRS.gov. From the IRS home page, click on 2007 Free File, then select Start Now. The optional “Guide Me to a Company!” wizard can help select which software to use, based on factors including the taxpayers’ state of residence, estimated income and age.
“The final days of the tax season always bring tax scams,” IRS Commissioner Mark W. Everson said. “Make sure you’re really dealing with the IRS.”
