(Providence, RI) – Long-time business partners John Capuano and Bill Rosa announced today the opening of their newest enterprise, JB Pharmacy II, the second addition to their Johnson-based independent, JB Pharmacy I.
The new store, located at 1001 Smith Street in Providence, will cater to the neighborhood that was serviced by their predecessor store LaSalle Pharmacy, a former occupant of the same building. LaSalle Pharmacy was purchased by John and Bill in 1987, and subsequently sold to CVS in 2003.

“We loved the neighborhood and the clients on Smith Street,” says Bill “But the overhead became a tremendous burden. With the new JB stores, given the smaller space, staff and inventory, we don’t face those same costs.”
The first of the two stores, JB Pharmacy I, launched in September 2004. “We are so pleased with the both the retail and managed-care demand we have seen over the last three years,” says John. “Given the success of the Johnson store, and opportunity to relocate to our old space, we felt it was the appropriate time to expand to a second store.”
Both John and Bill have been in the independent pharmacy business for over 30 years, servicing the Greater Providence community. Their intense love of the industry and their courteous, personalized approach has kept them profitable, when the vast majority of independent pharmacies have been pushed out over the past 20 years.
The partners explain that their new stores are part of a network of businesses called Heath Mart©, a program offered to independents by drug distributor McKesson Pharmaceutical. “Being a Health Mart store, you receive assistance on a wide-range of services, from processing insurance claims to local advertising,” says John. “The Health Mart Pharmacy program has created a much more favorable environment for small business going forward, and has formed a synergistic relationship between small retail businesses and our wholesaling colleagues.”
Joining the partnership of JB Pharmacy II is John’s younger brother, Paul Capuano, who brings with him 25 years of industry experience, particularly in the managed and long-term care arenas.
“Over the course of my career, I’ve spent a great deal of time working in long-term care and cultivating relationships with assisted living facilities,” says Paul, a former employee of Harvard Pilgrim Healthcare and Neighborcare. “I’ve worked in big business and have gained a great deal of perspective from that work. I’m now looking forward to the practicing pharmacy with my family, and creating innovative, new approaches to doing business with the clients we know and love.”
John, Bill and Paul are committed to providing the best possible care to all their clients. The new store, JB Pharmacy II, will be open for business on Thursday, November 1.
