Koller warns about ‘scam’ insurers

PROVIDENCE – Health Insurance Commissioner Christopher F. Koller is alerting Rhode Island consumers about four “scam” health insurance companies that have been placed into liquidation by a Tennessee court, and which may have sold products to local residents.
The companies, which were deemed to be financially hazardous to their policyholders and insolvent, are: American Trade Association Inc., American Trade Association LLC, Serve America Assurance, and Smart Data Solutions.
A website at www.americantradeliquidation.com will be maintained to provide up-to-date information about the liquidation and answers to frequently asked questions.
Koller said consumers who bought a policy from one of those companies may be eligible to file a Proof of Claim form with the liquidator, but he added that there is no guarantee that any of the claims will be paid or that the premiums will be refunded.
Proof of Claim submission must be filed by Aug. 31, 4:30 p.m. CDT. Claims filed late may be assigned a lower priority.
In a separate alert, Koller warned consumers about limited-benefit or discount health insurance “scams” that have been sold in Rhode Island by or through various companies. He listed the following:

• National Association of Business Leadership.
• Nationwide Administrators LLC.
• Real Benefits Association.
• Serve America Assurance Ltd.
• Smart Data Solutions LLC.
• SouthEast Insurance Advisors LLC.
• United States Contractors Trust.
• Viking Administrators LLC.
• Wilshire Holding LLC.
• Worldwide Family Benefits Association Inc.
None of these companies are licensed to do business in Rhode Island, Koller said.
