KVH gets $6.4M order for Navy gyros

MIDDLETOWN – KVH Industries Inc. recently received a $6.4 million order for its TG-6000 inertial measurement unit, which is based on the company’s fiber-optic gyro technology, for use by the U.S. Navy in MK54 torpedoes.
KVH said shipments for the order are expected to begin during the first half of 2010 and continue into 2011. The buyer was not disclosed.
“We are honored that the TG-6000 is a part of the technology that the U.S. Navy uses to complete missions and protect the United States and its allies around the world,” said Jay Napoli, vice president for fiber-optic gyro and original equipment manufacturer sales at KVH.
The MK54 lightweight torpedo is an anti-submarine warfare weapon deployed from surface ships, helicopters and fixed-wing aircraft to find and destroy underwater targets. It is currently used by all U.S. Navy surface and air anti-sub platforms, as well as 25 foreign navies.
In October, KVH said its defense sales of products including fiber-optic gyros increased 206 percent, to $10.6 million in the third quarter compared with a year earlier. •
