Rhode Island for Community & Justice executive director
Reflecting on my journey, I find myself at a pivotal moment – one that combines passion, purpose and responsibility. Over 15 years ago, I was introduced to Rhode Island for Community & Justice, an organization committed to combatting bias, fostering understanding and promoting social justice. Little did I know that this path would lead me to the role of executive director.
Taking the reins of an organization is both exhilarating and humbling. Challenges, isolation and the weight of responsibility accompanied the excitement. As executive directors, we navigate uncharted waters, balancing care and efficiency to ensure our organization’s survival.
In my journey, I’ve leaned on my lifeline. Connecting with seasoned executive directors and absorbing their wisdom has fortified my resolve. Their insights, tools and unwavering support have equipped me for this role.
My network, spanning family to professional cohorts, sustains me during tough times. To fellow leaders, my advice is simple: Create your circle and lean on them. Leadership can be lonely, but you need not bear it alone.
The world grows harsher each day, marred by hate and violence. As leaders, we must counter this trend. Cultivate empathy, foster inclusion and actively listen to others.
Let us build workplaces where bias, bigotry and racism find no foothold – a place where communication thrives, and retaliation has no place. Let’s weave empathy into our daily interactions. Let’s check in on our team members, celebrate their successes and lend a listening ear during tough times.
Let’s create a workplace where compassion thrives, where kindness is a currency and where no one feels alone. Together, we shape a better future – one rooted in compassion and understanding.
We can lead with empathy and make a lasting impact far beyond our organization.
