Legal services provider Epiq to have data products group based in Providence

PROVIDENCE — The city will soon become home of a data products group for a prominent operation in the legal services industry.

Atlanta-based Epiq Systems Inc., a company that takes on large-scale duties for law firms, corporate counsel and business professionals, announced Thursday its data products group will be fully established and operational in Providence within six to nine months.

A press release from Epiq states the company invests more than $30 million each year in innovation and development to “keep pace with and to address our clients’ requirements and ever-changing needs.”

The Rhode Island group, according to the release, will be a 30-person team that will partner with Epiq’s product management and development, client services and operations professionals worldwide to “design and deliver new data solutions.”

Epiq Chief Innovation Officer Cliff Dutton said in a prepared statement that the industry, even though it was an early adopter of analytics in eDiscovery, is still in the early stages of exploration regarding “the value that can be derived from legal data.” By focusing the investment on data science, legal process improvement and risk analysis, among other areas, Epiq, Dutton said, will be prepared to deliver “value” to its clients.

“Data relating to legal actions can be analyzed to better assess risks and forecast costs,” Dutton said in his statement. “As information governance, corporate compliance, internal investigations and eDiscovery converge, data science can deliver new operational awareness to executives responsible for legal, compliance and operations functions.”

Epiq currently has 41 offices established across the United States – including one in Boston – and 22 offices internationally in Canada, Europe, Asia, Australia and New Zealand.

The data group is currently recruiting members. Those interested in the positions are to visit epiqglobal.com/en-us/careers.
