LGBTQ health expert joins Thundermist Health Center in Woonsocket

WOONSOCKET – Dr. Tim Cavanaugh, a nationally recognized leader in LGBTQ health, joined Thundermist Health Center as a family medicine provider, which will improve the center’s ability to care for LGBTQ patients through his own expertise and by teaching colleagues through example.

Cavanaugh will care for LGBTQ patients, in addition to the general population, at Thundermist’s Woonsocket location.

Cavanaugh has dedicated his career to serving LGBTQ patients in the community health center setting. He partners with patients to help them be as healthy and well as possible. He has also dedicated many hours presenting cultural competency training to fellow health care providers.

“We’re excited to have Dr. Cavanaugh join the Thundermist team,” said Jeanne LaChance, president and CEO at Thundermist. “Dr. Cavanaugh’s expertise and dedication to the community will help us to further enhance our services to LGBTQ patients.”

“Health care needs to be tailored to each individual patient,” said Cavanaugh. “Patient-centered medical care is only possible if we have the appropriate screenings and conversations to understand all circumstances impacting a patient’s health. Thundermist Health Center provides integrated care in an affirming and inclusive environment. I’m proud to join their team.”

Most recently, Cavanaugh worked at Fenway Health in Boston, where he served as medical director for the Transgender Health Program. Previously, he worked at the Comprehensive Community Action Program in Cranston, where he helped develop a hepatitis prevention program, which delivered hepatitis vaccines and HIV testing services in nontraditional settings.

Cavanaugh is a graduate of Dartmouth University. He completed his fellowship training in family medicine at the University of Virginia, and is a certified physician through the American Board of Family Practices.
