Local firm used for Olympics’ turf fields

PROVIDENCE – As viewers worldwide watch athletes compete on new artificial turf at the Beijing Olympics, they can thank a Rhode Island company for the fields’ sleek design.

Abaqus, a DS-simulation software product made by Providence-based Simulia, is used for product development by Royal TenCate, the global market leader in synthetic turf fibers – and Royal TenCate is supplying all the field hockey fields for the Olympics.

In 2005, Dassault Systèmes, a French simulation and product lifecycle management company, paid $413 million cash to acquire Providence-based Simulia, a developer of nonlinear finite element analysis (FEA) software.
