SOUTH KINGSTOWN – Multiple local restaurants banded together this summer to welcome tourists and support Rhode Islanders in need.
Partnering with Welcome House of South County, a South Kingstown-based nonprofit dedicated to helping end homelessness in Washington County since 1987, restaurateurs – including the management teams of such venues as Matunuck Oyster Bar, Monahan’s Clam Shack by the Sea, Ocean Mist and Phil’s Main Street Grille – are sponsoring the group’s soup kitchen.

“South County has many unique characteristics that make us feel fortunate to live and work here, however homelessness and addiction are also realities in our area and we need to support those who need help in order to improve our entire community,” said Perry Raso, of Matunuck Oyster Bar, in a statement.
Thanks to local restaurateurs, last year Welcome House served nearly 18,000 meals to shelter guests and community members.
“Our area’s high cost of living has more and more people struggling with basic needs [such as] food and shelter,” said Allison Martinez, director of Welcome House, in a statement. “As government funding continues to decline, we are fortunate to have such generous restaurants that are committed to helping us end hunger and homelessness in our community.”
In addition, Welcome House offers an emergency shelter with 17 beds, transitional and permanent affordable housing, and advocacy services.
