Matthew and Erika Olivier took a chance and opened an independent pharmacy in Middletown, banking on their local connections and willingness to go the extra mile in personal service.
In this case, the extra mile means in-home deliveries.
Matt’s Local Pharmacy, at 88 East Main St., opened in early January. The name isn’t an accident. In addition to a full-service pharmacy, the store also features health, beauty and home products made by Rhode Island crafters.
“We wanted to emphasize the local component of our pharmacy,” Matt said.
He is a graduate of University of Rhode Island’s College of Pharmacy and worked for 18 years at a retail pharmacy chain and then at Newport Hospital’s clinical pharmacy before opening the business. Erika previously worked in environmental education.
In the pharmacy, they wanted a close connection to their customers.
“I feel like I had built up a following, or a customer base, at my previous location,” he said. “I felt like … I could do a better job.”
