Metcalf Diversity Award winners named

PROVIDENCE – Winners of the 29th annual Metcalf Awards for Diversity in the Media, organized by Rhode Island for Community & Justice, have been named.

The awards honor journalistic excellence in reporting matters of diversity. Recipients will be honored at a breakfast celebration slated for 8 a.m. on May 17 at the Providence Biltmore, 11 Dorrance St.

At the event, each journalist who will be recognized will be joined by a subject of their winning story. Both will speak and take questions from the audience.

The award winners are:

  • Vanessa Toledo-Vickers of the Academy for Career Exploration and Latino Public Radio RI for “Invest in Your Strengths” – a 10-part, bilingual radio series focused on how the high school is rethinking its educational approach to prepare youth for a 21st-century workplace. (Community Award)
  • G. Wayne Miller at The Providence Journal for “Saving Rob” – a story that exposes the DCYF foster care crisis through the story of a child named Rob and his new family, as they continue to navigate the system. Part 1  Part 2  Part 3  Timeline. (Print Daily Award)
  • Casey Nilsson of Rhode Island Monthly for “They’ve All Come To Look For America” – the story of a Syrian refugee family living in Rhode Island and the challenges they continue to face. (Print Monthly Award)

  • Jim Vincent of The Jim Vincent Show on Providence PEG and CW28 for “Effect of Election – an exploration of the after-effects of the 2016 presidential election on communities. (Broadcast TV Award)
  • Elisabeth Harrison, John Bender and Chuck Hinman of Rhode Island Public Radio for “St. George’s Loophole” – a multipart series about RIPR’s investigation of allegations of in-school abuse that revealed a little-known loophole in Rhode Island’s child abuse laws, prompting advocates and lawmakers to take action toward fixing R.I.’s mandatory reporting statute.
