MIDDLETOWN – MIKEL Inc. has been awarded two U.S. Navy contracts worth about $10.7 million, the Middletown-based company announced late Thursday.
The larger of the two contracts is a five-year deal worth about $10 million to provide technical services for the Naval Undersea Warfare Center Division Newport.
Specifically, MIKEL, a woman-owned, small-business defense contractor, will provide support services for the center’s “Code 25 Undersea Warfare Combat Systems” department. MIKEL will provide services to maintain, update, and support the Anti-Submarine Warfare Tactical Assessment System and Sonar Position Report System websites, along with associated hardware and software.
In addition, data collection will be provided and supported through installation and maintenance of the Marine Inertial Navigation Systems. The work will directly support the Undersea Warfighting Development Center in San Diego, Calif., and Groton, Conn.
“MIKEL is thrilled to have been awarded [this] contract,” MIKEL President Kelly Mendell said in the announcement.
“It is a natural extension of the work we are already doing in the areas of [undersea warfare] combat systems, which has helped position us to win this award, and perform the high level of work needed,” Mendell added.
The other Navy contract is a two-year deal worth $700,000 for research and development work. The research will focus on the prototype development of novel sonar data correlation and multi-sensor processing algorithms.
MIKEL will be developing “advanced active and passing beam-forming algorithms to improve MK48 Heavyweight Torpedo classification of low-Doppler contacts, according to the company.
“Being awarded this contract allows MIKEL to continue to provide new innovative technology and maintain our participation in research and development for state-of-the-art equipment to serve our nation’s Navy,” Mendell said.
Founded in 1999 by Brian Guimond, Mendell’s father, MIKEL provides undersea warfare solutions and services for the U.S. Department of Defense. The company has about 200 employees, such as engineers, scientists, technicians, and management support personnel.
Headquartered in Middletown, MIKEL also has offices in Washington, D.C., Fairfax, Va., and Groton, Conn.
