More good reviews for R.I. nursing homes

PROVIDENCE – State officials have released more data from the latest patient and family satisfaction surveys of local nursing homes conducted by My InnerView, and they show that Rhode Island facilities continue to outperform their peers, industry officials announced this week.
My InnerView, a subsidiary of National Research Corp., is the nation’s largest provider of performance measurement and benchmarking in this field. The state uses its surveys as part of a broader quality monitoring and reporting system that also includes regular inspections and clinical data collection.
A news release from the Rhode Island Health Care Association, which represents mostly for-profit nursing homes, highlighted two key findings in the 2009 My InnerView surveys:

92 percent of residents surveyed rated their satisfaction as “excellent” or “good,” and 92 percent rated their willingness to recommend the facility as “excellent” or “good,” compared with 88 percent, on average, nationally.
“The proportion of ‘excellent’ responses in the overall combined global satisfaction number has continued to grow and is quite high by national standards,” RIHCA officials noted.
92 percent of family survey respondents gave an overall “excellent” or “good” rating, and as many said they would recommend the facility where their loved one was receiving care. The national average is 86 percent.

My InnerView also surveyed the staff of local nursing homes last year – which is not part of the state reporting requirement. On those surveys, 68 percent of respondents rated their overall satisfaction as “excellent” or “good,” and 79 percent said they would recommend their facility as an “excellent” or “good” place to receive care.
“Rhode Island facilities routinely outperform their national counterparts on clinical measures,” said Virginia Burke, president and CEO of RIHCA. “It’s even better news, though, when the results of our quality improvement efforts are lauded by the elderly we serve, and their families.”
