PROVIDENCE – Ioanna Morfessis will not be the next executive director of the R.I. Economic Development Corporation after all.
Gov. Donald L. Carcieri last week announced that Morfessis, an Arizona business consultant, will not accept the $250,000-a-year post. In a press release issued by the governor’s office, she cited “recent knowledge of a family member’s serious health challenges” as the reason for turning down the job.
Carcieri appointed her on Dec. 8, subject to approval by the state Senate. Soon after, she traveled to Rhode Island to meet with state business and political leaders.
The governor said he has contacted House and Senate leadership “to discuss an alternative plan” that he expected to announce this week. •
