Morning Consult: Raimondo receives 41% approval rating

PROVIDENCE – Gov. Gina M. Raimondo received a 41 percent approval rating in a Morning Consult third-quarter 2017 poll results, a decline of 2 percentage points from the 2017 second-quarter results.

The report said that 47 percent of respondents in the poll said that they disapproved of Raimondo’s job performance, and 12 percent responded with a don’t know/no opinion. Raimondo’s disapproval rating remained the same from the second quarter.

The margin of error in Rhode Island was 3 percent.

Raimondo tied for the ninth lowest approval rating for a governor in the nation with Gov. Jim Justice of West Virginia. Raimondo tied for the 10th highest disapproval rating in the nation with Gov. Scott Walker of Wisconsin.

In response to questions raised about the poll results, Raimondo told reporters Tuesday morning she thought the state had made a lot of progress under her tenure as governor, but added there is still a lot to do.

“If that’s frustrating to people, I get that. But as long as people will let me, I’ll keep doing this job seven days a week,” Raimondo said. “We just have to stay at it.”

Gov. Chris Christie had the lowest approval (18 percent) and highest disapproval (77 percent) ratings of any governor in the nation, followed by Gov. Dannel Malloy of Connecticut (23 percent/68 percent).

Gov. Charlie Baker of Massachusetts had the highest approval rating of any governor in the nation at 69 percent and tied for the second lowest disapproval rating at 17 percent with Gov. Doug Burgum of North Dakota. Gov. Kay Ivey of Alabama had the lowest disapproval rating of any governor in the third quarter at 12 percent.

Morning Consult surveyed 255,120 registered U.S. voters from July 1 to Sept. 30, 2017, to determine its latest Governor Approval Rankings.
