PROVIDENCE – The consumer price index, not-seasonally adjusted, for items in New England rose 1.6 percent year over year in August, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics Thursday.
The National CPI rose 1.9 percent in August.

New England CPI highlights from August:
- Household furnishings and operations fell 0.9 percent year over year
- Rent of primary residence increased 2.7 percent in August, less than the national average increase of 3.9 percent
- Energy increased 8.8 percent since August 2016
- Gasoline and motor fuel both rose 14 percent year over year
- Fuels and utilities rose 4.8 percent year over year, including a 9.1 percent uptick in utility (piped) gas service
- Alcoholic beverages rose 0.6 percent year over year, less than half of the national rate increase
- Education and communication dropped 1.8 percent year over year following a national trend of price decline in the sector (a 2.6 percent decline nationally)
- Medical care rose 1.4 percent year over year compared the the national 1.8 percent increase
