WESTBOROUGH, Mass. – National Grid’s “GreenUp” renewable energy program is ranked among the Top 10 utility company green power programs nationwide by the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory, the company announced today.
Though “green power sales continue to show strong growth across the country, these utilities are the national leaders,” Lori Bird, senior energy analyst at the NREL, said in a statement.

The lab’s rankings are based on data provided by the utility companies, including total sales of renewable energy to participants and total number of customer participants. GreenUp ranked eighth in both categories out of 600 U.S. utility companies that offer such programs, the NREL reported.
As of December, nearly 24,000 National Grid customers in New York, Massachusetts and Rhode Island have participated in GreenUp, purchasing more than 156 kilowatts (156 kW) of renewable power, the utility said.
Through GreenUp, suppliers of renewable power – from sources including wind, hydropower and landfill gases – are able to offer electricity to National Grid customers. The utility company remains responsible for billing and other customer service.
