WEST GREENWICH – The Nature Conservancy dedicated the McAlpine-Shepard Preserve at Tillinghast Pond last week with a stone monument and ceremonial ribbon to open a new trail.
Five-hundred acres of open space was dedicated to the conversancy in November 2006 by the estate of Phebe McAlpine Shepard, a gift of land that was critical to the establishment of the Tillinghast Pond Management Area at 100 Hazard Road.

The conservancy worked closely with the town to build a new 10-car parking area and trailhead for the preserve. The new three-quarter-mile Shepard Trail starts from the parking area and connects to a 13-mile trail system, maintained by the conservancy and volunteers. In addition, the McAlpine-Shepard Preserve protects 1.5 miles of the North-South trail, which runs from Burrillville to Charlestown. •
