Nature’s Trust RI petitions RIDEM to implement climate change regulations

PROVIDENCE – Nature’s Trust Rhode Island has petitioned the R.I. Department of Environmental Management to put regulations in place to ensure the state “does its fair share to reduce greenhouse gas emissions,” the youth-driven organization announced Sept. 5.

According to its website, NTRI is “supporting a global legal campaign of that seeks systemic, scientifically sound greenhouse gas emission reduction and climate recovery policy at all levels of government by litigation to improve state and federal practices.”

NTRI says DEM has not lived up to its obligations under the R.I. Constitution by issuing permits for proposed energy projects.

According to NTRI, the petition relies on duties contained in the state’s constitution to protect the public trust, including the duty to protect “the air, land, water, plant, animal, mineral and other natural resources of the state.”
