NEW BEDFORD – The Fairhaven Mills Rehabilitation Project got a boost with the announcement yesterday of a $1.3 million public-infrastructure grant.
Gov. Deval L. Patrick made the announcement during a 9:30 a.m. visit to the Greater New Bedford Career Center.

The money – the first of 20 grants to be awarded statewide under the Mass. Opportunity Relocation and Expansion jobs capital program (MORE Jobs), a state program intended to help draw businesses to new developments – will help pay for widening a highway off-ramp and adding traffic signals in the region around the former mill, the governor’s office said.
“The MORE Jobs program provides resources to support partnerships between local municipalities and the private sector to foster development and help create hundreds of new jobs,” Patrick said in a statement. According to his office, about 300 full-time permanent jobs are expected to be created by the Fairhaven Mills project.
The mill project is a three-building mixed-use redevelopment that will produce about 70,000 square feet of retail space, 31,100 square feet of commercial space and 24,000 square feet of medical space. It also will feature a “community boathouse” and a publicly accessible waterfront promenade.
The Mass. Opportunity Relocation and Expansion jobs capital program (MORE Jobs), established in 2006, is a program of the state Executive Office of Housing and Economic Development. MORE Jobs issues grants for public infrastructure improvements. Its ultimate goal is to help ready both public and private parcels for new business growth and relocation.
