NEW BEDFORD – A new bike-share program launched in New Bedford Thursday.

Cruiser bikes will be available at stations in Fort Taber Park and State Pier for members to use on-demand. Riders join the program by singing up for annual, pay-as-you-go or student membership.

The bike-share has a $25 annual fee, with trips for less than an hour free and $1 each additional 30 minutes, up to $20.

Members must be at least 18 years of age.

New Bedford has teamed up with the bike-share company Zagster Inc., which offers bikes that can include a built-in lock, allowing riders to take mid-trip breaks.

“One of the things that makes New Bedford such a great place to live is our access to the water. The bike-share program is a great tool for even more people to experience our fantastic shoreline,” said New Bedford Mayor Jon Mitchell.
