PBN: What are you looking forward to in your new position?
LISLE: I am looking forward to moving ahead with the future growth of the firm by participating in the partnership as an active managing partner and working directly advising clients on their investments. Brown, Lisle/Cummings is unique because managing partners run the firm and also work directly with clients.

PBN: What is the history of the firm?
LISLE: It was founded in 1912 by my great grandfather and has been located in the Turks Head Building since 1913. In 1984 we merged with Cummings & Co., another Rhode Island based investment firm founded in 1927. Brown, Lisle/Cummings has survived the great depression, two world wars and the waves of consolidations and mergers when many other firms went out of business. It has been privately owned by its partners for 96 years.

PBN: What are some valuable business lessons you learned from your family?
LISLE: The importance of long-term focus – public companies must report to shareholders on a short-term basis and have to meet short-term goals. By remaining private and independent, Brown, Lisle/Cummings has remained focused on the long-term. I believe that is why we have been able to ride through the good and bad markets and continue to grow. The firm has successfully managed investments for many local families for the last four to five generations. Because we have adopted advancements in telecommunications and computer technologies, we now can and do offer services to many other clients around the nation and the globe.
The importance of objective investment advice: Because we do not have proprietary products such as in-house mutual funds or inventory positions in securities, our financial advice is independent and more objective. •
