New Wave Café shuttered in tax dispute

NEW BEDFORD – The New Wave Café, a longtime showcase for original music, was shut down Wednesday by The Mass. Department of Revenue for nonpayment of taxes, seizing the bar’s alcohol license, safe and cash register, the Standard-Times reports.

Owner Paul Mendes told the Standard-Times he had been trying to negotiate a payment agreement for the last year. “I guess we ran out of time,” he said.

The café hadn’t paid meals and sales taxes since June 1997, the department said. But Revenue Department spokeswoman Jennifer Parent said there was still a chance an agreement could be reached to reopen the New Wave.
