NEWPORT – The Newport Hospital fundraiser “A Salute to Health” raised more than $1 million for hospital programs and for the completion of an expansion of the hospital’s emergency department.

Held at the Eisenhower House on July 10, the fundraiser also served to honor the Prince family of the “Powered by Prince” Fund at Newport Hospital. The fund sponsors activities and programs from underserved, school-age children throughout Newport County.

A “fund-a-need blitz” during the event raised $638,781 to help finance the completion of the emergency department expansion. The expanded ED, which is expected to be completed by October, will double the number of treatment rooms in the department, a new behavioral health area and a four-bed observation unit. The new ED is projected to have the capacity to serve more than 40,000 patient visits annually.

“I continue to be humbled and inspired by the generosity of our donor community,” Crista F. Durand, president of Newport Hospital, said at the event. “Your love for our hospital shined through tonight. Newport Hospital’s new state-of-the-art emergency department will make an enormous difference in the lives of our patients for years to come.”

The event concluded with a presentation to honor the “Powered by Prince” Fund and the Prince family.

In 2010, Elizabeth “Lisette” Prince and her children, Guillaume de Ramel, Diana Oehrli and Regis de Ramel, donated $3 million to establish the Frederick Henry Prince Memorial Fund at Newport Hospital to fund activities for children who otherwise might not have access to such opportunities. The fund is now known as the “Powered by Prince” Fund. In nine years, it has granted more than $627,000 to dozens of organizations.

“Thanks to the vision of the Prince family and their incredible philanthropy, our hospital’s reach extends far beyond its walls to fulfill our mission of promoting health to the families in our community,” Durand said.
