N.Y. chain buying Alperts for undisclosed price

SEEKONK – Raymour & Flanigan Furniture, a retail chain with 3,800 employees and 70 stores in six states, including two in western Massachusetts, has signed a deal to buy Alperts Furniture Showplace in the deal slated to close in two to three months.
The price was not disclosed.
Founded in New Bedford in 1906 and relocated to Seekonk in 1972, Alpert’s is family-owned, headed by president and CEO Hershel Alpert. It employs about 155 people. Raymour & Flanigan is also owned and run by a family, the Goldbergs, whom Alpert told the Taunton Gazette he has known for 40 years.
In a news release, Raymour & Flanigan CEO Neil Goldberg said he had visited the Seekonk store and told the staff “that we are driven to make this transition as smooth for them as for the customers they have served so well over the years.”
The chain has also committed to honor all Alperts furniture orders, gift cards, discounts, layaways and warranties.
