PROVIDENCE – The Southern New England Rehabilitation Center, at St. Joseph Hospital for Specialty Care in Providence, has scheduled its 15th annual rehabilitation conference for Friday, Oct. 3, at the R.I. Convention Center. The session will focus on wellness in geriatric rehabilitation.
The conference will examine disability prevention and health promotion for New England’s elderly, a population that is expected to double over the next 30 years.

The material is geared to an intermediate-level professional audience. There will be presentations on mental health, pharmacological challenges, exercise and nutrition, cognitive aspects of aging, speech and swallowing issues, osteoporosis and fracture prevention.
Keynote speakers are to include Norma J. Owens, of the Rhode Island Geriatric Education Center; Thomas Guilmette, associate professor of psychology at Providence College and director of neuropsychology at the Southern New England Rehabilitation Center; and Dr. Peter Deblasio, chief of ophthalmology at St. Joseph Health Services of Rhode Island.
