NEWPORT – On Sunday evening the Tall Ship Oliver Hazard Perry lost engine power while leaving the Bowen’s Wharf Seafood Festival, causing the ship to make contact with four boats docked in Newport Harbor.
The ship’s propellers got caught in a dock line, which caused the power outage, according to a statement from Oliver Hazard Perry Rhode Island, the nonprofit that manages the ship. The propellers were cleared of the line Monday morning and both of the ship’s engines were said to be operational.

A representative for the ship said that the boat will be moved at about 3 p.m. to its permanent berth at Fort Adams with assistance from Tug Jaguar, a boat from Mitchell Towing in Fairhaven, Mass. Two other tugboats will be on standby for assistance with the move.
The owners of the four impacted vessels have been contacted, and the boats are being assessed for damage, said OHPRI.
The Oliver Hazard Perry will undergo U.S. Coast Guard-required sea trials later this week. The ship is not expected to miss any 2018 voyages or planned festival participation.
