PROVIDENCE – Senate President M. Teresa Paiva Weed last week called upon the governor’s administration to restore service for the R.I. Department of Motor Vehicles on Aquidneck Island.
The lease for the current facility in Middletown expired on Friday, Feb. 11. A request for proposals for a new lease for the branch drew no bids, the second time an RFP process saw no action.
“This is a critical service for the residents, and a new location must be identified as swiftly as possible,” Paiva Weed said in a statement. “I have expressed in the past the Senate delegation’s concern that the requirements identified in the request for proposals were too restrictive, a factor which we believe played a role in there being no proposals submitted.”
In the statement, she noted that the addition of an additional day of service at the Warren DMV branch, while welcome, is no substitute for finding a new location for a branch on Aquidneck Island.
According to The Associated Press, a spokesman for Gov. Lincoln D. Chafee said the administration will work to respond to Paiva Weed’s concerns. •
