In some ways, New England is a paver’s paradise. Frost heaves, potholes and the usual wear and tear of winter are hard on asphalt surfaces. That’s where Jason and Justyne Johnson come in.
The Warwick couple used their savings to start Statewide Paving and Patching Inc. in October. Much of the money went to buying equipment, including a dump truck and an asphalt roller. Since then, they’ve been pleasantly surprised by the amount of business they’re getting now that spring is here.
“My phone has been ringing all day,” Justyne Johnson said recently. “We’re very surprised. We didn’t think it was going to happen that fast.”
Jason Johnson does the paving and Justyne Johnson handles administrative duties. They work mainly on parking lots and driveways, both commercial and residential. Most of their customers are in Rhode Island and some are in Massachusetts.
Before forming the company, Jason Johnson had worked for many years in the paving business. There are plenty of similar companies in the area, but there seems to be enough work to go around.
“We’re grateful to be able to serve the people of Rhode Island in this way,” Justyne Johnson said.
