WITH 247 EMPLOYEES, Pawtucket Credit Union recognizes that its health and wellness programs must include lots of variety.

Such variety includes workouts such as the popular Walking Wednesdays group hikes and weekly cardio classes at a local gym. But wellness also can embrace topics such as personal finances, so the credit union has offered seminars on retirement planning and market volatility.

The credit union’s health program even stretched the definition of wellness to include a de-stressing “paint night.” People gathered at a local painting studio to socialize and create a painting under the direction of a lead artist.

Unsurprisingly, paint night was very popular, said Heather Thurber, assistant director of human resources for the credit union.

‘A company is nothing without its employees. Companies should focus on employees’ wellness. It’s the right thing to do.’

“We tend to offer a variety of different topics,” Thurber said, “and people respond well to that.” If employees respond to a fitness project with a general shrug, the idea is shelved for awhile.

The credit union hosted its inaugural Wellness Day last year, organizing walks and encouraging people to be mindful of their water consumption. Lunch-and-learn seminars cover topics such as memory and aging, sleeping, and nutrition myths.
