Pell Center cybersecurity session to focus on threats, trends, solutions

NEWPORT – The Pell Center for International Relations and Public Policy at Salve Regina University will hold a half-day cybersecurity awareness event on Oct. 24.

The Pell Center is holding the event with the Rhode Island Joint Cyber Task Force, the Southeastern New England Defense Industry Alliance and the Ocean State Higher Education Economic Development and Administrative Network.

Held to highlight National Cybersecurity Awareness Month, organizers said the event will focus on the most pressing cyberthreats facing businesses, local governments and municipalities, as well as the need to build a cybersecurity culture across organizations.

The event will be moderated by Francesca Spidalieri, senior fellow for cyber leadership at the Pell Center. Israel Barak, chief information security officer with Cybereason, will discuss ransomware attacks on municipal and state agencies; O’Shea Bowens, founder and CEO of Null Hat Security, will present a talk on cybersecurity in the workplace; and Matthew J. Wainwright, chief information security officer for the town of Middletown, will discuss cyber and artificial intelligence as a force multiplier in the chief information security officer’s office.

According to organizers, the event will show how a well-trained workforce is the best line of defense for organizations and discuss how to create a culture of cybersecurity.
