PROVIDENCE – Legislation approved by the General Assembly and presented to Gov. Gina M. Raimondo will require local planning boards and commissions to undergo annual training on the implications of sea-level rise and the effect of development on flood plains.
The new training requirement was in legislation initially sponsored by Rep. Lauren H. Carson, D-Newport, and Sen. Jeanine Calkin, D-Warwick. It expands beyond waterfront communities to all Rhode Island communities because flooding occurs along inland rivers and water bodies as well as oceanfront sites.

The legislation requires each member of a local planning board or commission to take a free, one-hour training session covering the impacts of development and sea-level rise. The training program, developed by the University of Rhode Island, has been covered in the state budget approved last year.
Lawmakers approved the legislation when they returned to session on Sept. 19.
