PPL gets $173,155 in Champlin technology grants

PROVIDENCE – The Providence Public Library today announced $173,155 in technology grants from The Champlin Foundations: a $106,230 grant directly to the PPL and another grant of $66,925, payable to Ocean State Libraries on the PPL’s behalf. The latter grant will go directly to the OSL, the library said.
The awards will support “a variety of technology / equipment requirements to enable PPL to continue to provide high quality library services expected in today’s technology-driven and digital world,” the library said.
Of the PPL’s grant, $42,300 is allocated for hardware and network equipment for digital preservation and access or exhibition; $37,380 will go toward system hardware; $25,425 toward an improved public computer access management system; and $1,125 for wireless access equipment to expand customer services.
“The Champlin Foundations’ consistent and strong support of the Providence Public Library year after year has enabled the library to accomplish a great many of its service goals,” Dale Thompson, the library’s director, said in a midday statement. “Of late, The Champlin Foundations’ continued generosity has ensured that the library maintains its important role as a provider of vast information and learning resources through a multitude of technology-driven services.
“In particular, this year’s grant will help us not only stay abreast of developments in technology, but to move forward with varied digital library services as we pursue the library’s mission in an increasingly technology savvy world,” Thompson said.
“In addition, the PPL grant made through the OSL system helps us to continue to provide the necessary and valued access to technology for residents of Providence and all Rhode Island.”

(In its recent annual report, the library posted a deficit of $85,827 for fiscal 2007. READ MORE)
