Product: PLS-2020, Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) – PURVIS Systems has leveraged a quarter-century of experience in the development of LIMS solutions for a variety of industries with new software development technology to meet the needs of one specific market: small and mid-sized environmental labs. Although environmental labs perform very similar analyses, they operate very differently from one another. This is the biggest challenge faced in the development of a commercial LIMS product that delivers analytical and operational functionality at a competitive price.

The design and implementation of PLS-2020 is driven by the challenges and competition confronting environmental labs today with a strong emphasis on future considerations. The foundation of the PLS-2020 is a robust data model that allows a lab to make use of as much or as little of the functionality of the system as needed to support the business and analytical operations without penalty.

The PLS-2020 increases the competitiveness and capacity of existing staff, enhances workflow organization and schedules, and automates fee calculation for all work orders or quotes. It is Year 2000 compliant. Because of its data architecture, performance will not degrade as the database grows. It is a protected investment in that the system can grow without loss of previous investment. PLS-2020 is priced with the small lab in mind. It is provided with a non-exclusive perpetual site license allowing unlimited users and a warranty.

Market: Small-to-medium sized environmental labs requiring an effective lab information management system.

ECLIPSE sheds just the right amount of light.
Company: OneTech, 23 Acorn St., Providence, R.I. 02903, toll free phone (877) ONE-TECH, fax: (401) 273-0630

Internet address: www.computerlight.com

Product: Eclipse Computer Light – a light that can be mounted on top of a computer video monitor to help reduce screen glare, and can reduce eyestrain and headaches associated with Computer Vision Syndrome (CVS) as well. An adjustable visor on the lamp diffuses the light, bathing only the keyboard and desktop workspace in a soft light. The Eclipse comes with an energy efficient 10,000 hour light bulb, which should last for four to five years.

The American Optometric Association has reported that American companies and employees now spend close to $2 billion each year to diagnose and treat CVS. The reasons for eyestrain among computer users include glare, excessive and insufficient lighting, improper ergonomics, poor-quality or inappropriately adjusted monitor, uncorrected vision and insufficient eye care. Some studies have shown that indirect lighting reduces glare significantly.

The Eclipse is now available through OneTech’s Web site and will be offered in several catalogs later this year, with roll out in retail stores to follow over the next year or so. It carries a suggested retail price of $59.95 and has a five year warranty.

Market: Home and office computer users.
