PROVIDENCE – For their June meetup, Providence Geeks will host Looking Glass Factory, a startup with offices in Providence, Hong Kong and New York that creates volumetric displays to project digital images into three-dimensional space.

Founded by CEO Shawn Frayne and Chief Technology Officer Alex Hornstein, Looking Glass uses hundreds or even thousands of points of light in the form of LED pixels to “bring living pieces of digital space into the real world” in a midair 3-D space that emulates the science-fictional concept of a hologram.

Hornstein will join the Providence Geeks on Wednesday to explain the challenges of midair interaction and present a few new prototypes of the Looking Glass display, including a low-cost DIY system that allows 2-D interaction and a higher-end system that offers full 3-D display and interaction.

The June meetup will take place at the AS220 in Providence on Wednesday, June 21, from 5:30 to 8 p.m., with Hornstein’s presentation scheduled to begin at 6:30. The event is free, but attendees buy their own food and drink.
