PROVIDENCE – The Providence-Warwick-Fall River metropolitan area’s construction employment increased 1,100 workers, or 4 percent, year over year in September. The growth rate ranked No. 189 among the largest metro areas in the country, according to the Associated General Contractors of America Tuesday.
Total construction employment in the Providence metro was 25,700 in September.

In New England, the Hartford-West Hartford-East Hartford, Conn., metropolitan area ranked highest at No. 18 in the country with a 13 percent year-over-year construction-employment growth rate.
The Taunton-Middleborough-Norton, Mass., metro area ranked No. 71 in September for an 8 percent growth rate, rising 300 workers to 3,900 construction jobs.
The Norwich-New London-Westerly, Conn.-R.I., metro ranked No. 94 with a 7 percent growth rate, also rising 300 workers to 4,400 construction workers.
The Naples-Immokalee-Marco Island, Fla., metro ranked No. 1 in September with a 27 percent year-over-year growth rate.
“It is a good time to be looking for a high-paying job in construction in many parts of the country,” said Ken Simonson, the AGCA’s chief economist. “Construction hiring would likely have been even more robust if construction firms could find more qualified candidates to hire.”
The report noted that construction employment increased in 278 out of the 358 measured metro areas between September 2017 and September 2018.
