PROVIDENCE – Nonseasonally adjusted construction employment in the Providence-Warwick-Fall River metropolitan area increased 5 percent year over year, or 1,200 workers to 25,000 jobs, in December, according to the Associated General Contractors of America Tuesday.
The metro area’s construction employment growth rate ranked No. 150 in the nation among 358 metro areas.

- Taunton-Middleborough-Norton metro: Construction employment increased 6 percent, or 200 jobs to 3,700 employed, year over year in December, ranking No. 113 in the nation.
- Norwich-New London, Conn.-Westerly metro: Construction employment increased 13 percent, or 500 jobs to 4,400 employed, year over year in December, ranking No. 21 in the country.
Construction employment grew in 273 out of 358 metro areas between December 2017 and December 2018, declined in 37 and was unchanged in 48, according to AGCA.
“There were 278,000 job openings in construction at the end of November, a record for the month, so it’s likely that more metro areas would have had job gains in December if contractors had been able to find qualified workers,” Ken Simonson, the AGCA’s chief economist, said in a statement.
