PROVIDENCE – The unemployment rate in the Providence-Warwick-Fall River metropolitan area declined 0.2 percentage points year over year to 3.8% in August, seasonally unadjusted, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics Wednesday.
The unemployment rate in the metro area was the same as the Rhode Island and the United States unemployment rates.

Unemployment rates were lower in August than a year earlier in 224 of the 389 measured metropolitan areas in the United States, higher in 132 metros, and unchanged in 33 metros.
The civilian labor force in the Providence metro increased 0.7% year over year to 698,794 people. The number of unemployed in the metro area in that time declined 4.6% to 26,298 people. The number of nonfarm jobs in the metro area increased 1.4% year over year to 600,000, seasonally unadjusted.
The unemployment rate in the New Bedford metro in August declined 0.5 percentage points year over year to 4.2%. The civilian labor force increased 391 people year over year. The number of unemployed in the area declined 10.3% year over year to 3,686. Nonfarm employment in the metro increased 1.4% year over year to 67,100 jobs.
The unemployment rate in the Norwich-New London, Conn.-Westerly metro area was 3.4% in August, a 0.4 percentage-point decline year over year, seasonally unadjusted. The labor force in the area declined 0.6% year over year to 144,654 people. Th number of unemployed declined 10.1% year over year to 4,937 people. Nonfarm employment in the metro area was 131,200 in August, a 0.6% decline year over year.
