PROVIDENCE – The unemployment rate in the Providence-Warwick-Fall River metropolitan area declined 0.4 percentage points year over year to 3.2% in December, the Bureau of Labor Statistics said on Wednesday.
The unemployment rate was 3.5% in Rhode Island and nationally in December.

The labor force in the metro area increased 1% over the year to 699,392 individuals. The number of unemployed in the region declined 11.8% to 22,208.

The New Bedford metro unemployment rate in December was 3.8%, a decline from 4% one year prior. The labor force increased 0.5% to 87,736. The number of unemployed in the metro declined 4.6% to 3,312. Nonfarm employment in the metro increased 0.3% to 68,200 individuals.
The Norwich-New London-Westerly unemployment rate declined 0.1 percentage point to 3.2% in December. The labor force declined 45 individuals year over year to 141,856 people. The number of unemployed in the area declined 1.8% to 4,530. Nonfarm employment increased 0.1% to 129,800 individuals.
