Providence Place teaming up<br> with Habitat Providence

PROVIDENCE – Providence Place mall today announced it is teaming up with Habitat for Humanity of R.I.-Greater Providence Inc. to raise resources and awareness. Their three-year partnership is to culminate in the construction of the Providence Place House, a development fully funded by Providence Place.
The mall win enlist customers and employees to help build houses for the needy and to participate in fundraising events and public-awareness initiatives on behalf of the local affiliate of the world’s largest nonprofit housing organization.
“We are proud to be part of Habitat’s life-changing mission of helping families in need experience a better quality of life,” said Craig Gorris, senior general manager at the mall, which is owned by real estate investment trust General Growth Properties Inc.
The mall will kick off the new partnership Wednesday, May 9, with the 1 p.m. unveiling of an 8-foot by 8-foot wooden “house” covered with paper symbols representing each family living in substandard housing in Providence. Patrons will be invited to remove a “family portrait” from the structure and donate $1 to Habitat Providence.
The event also will feature representatives from Habitat and Providence Place, discussing details of the partnership, and a donation table staffed by Habitat Providence volunteers.
“It is logical and important that a large developer like General Growth Properties is partnering with a non profit housing organization like Habitat Providence,” said Herman deKoe, Executive Director of Habitat Providence. A giant from the real estate world is reaching out to families who cannot afford to buy a house at market rate. Habitat Providence looks forward to its three-year partnership with GGP with high expectations.”

Habitat for Humanity International, based in Americus, Ga., is an ecumenical ministry that welcomes all people dedicated to eliminating poverty housing.
