Providence receives $9.9M to revive local neighborhoods

WASHINGTON – Providence will receive over $9.9 million in federal aid to help revive local neighborhoods, U.S. Sen. Jack Reed, D-R.I., said on Wednesday.
The funding comes through the Transportation-HUD Appropriations bill, under several programs including: the Community Development Block Grants, the Home Investment Partnerships, the Housing Opportunities for Persons with HIV/AIDS, and Emergency Shelter Grants.
“This federal funding will help create jobs and support local initiatives. These funds will spur economic development, provide affordable housing, and help improve public facilities in Providence,” said Reed.
“This is exactly the type of federal investment that helps strengthen families by providing more affordable homes, build strong neighborhoods and put people back to work,” said David N. Cicilline.
The Community Development Block Grants, totaling $6,152,614, are designated to public infrastructure improvements, job creation, affordable housing and public services that primarily benefit low and moderate income households.
The Home Investment Partnerships funds, totaling $2,689,100, are allotted to state and local governments for housing programs.
Both the Community Development and Home Investment grants are distributed to nonprofit agencies and local neighborhood groups that competitively apply for them.
The $874,203 grant under the Housing Opportunities for Persons with HIV/AIDS program is designed to offer housing assistance and related supportive services to low-income individuals who have been diagnosed with HIV/AIDS.
The Emergency Shelter Grants, totaling $248,396, will be distributed to public and private organizations to improve the quality and number of emergency homeless shelters.
