Providence school supt. won’t renew contract

PROVIDENCE – Embattled Providence School Supt. Donnie Evans will not renew his contract with the city when it expires this year, according to Mayor David N. Cicilline.
“I am grateful to Dr. Evans for his service and commitment to the children of Providence,” Cicilline said in a statement. “He is a man of unquestioned integrity, decency and dedication, who cares deeply about every student in the Providence schools. I am also grateful that he will continue to lead the district for the remainder of the year and is committed to finishing the semester strong.”
Evans had been facing increasing criticism in the wake of a December snowstorm that stranded more than 100 Providence school students on buses for several hours. Other issues have posed problems for Evans’ tenure including a no-confidence vote by the city’s teachers union this month. •
