A recent study by consultants working for the prospective developer of
the Quonset Port has raised some serious concerns about the
environmental impact of the development of a mega port.
While it is clear the report itself does not and should not doom the
project, it raises serious issues that need further exploration before
officials determine the scope of a Quonset Port, whether it is a mega
port or something less imposing.
There is no question that a port would be beneficial economically, but
Rhode Island’s most precious resource is its quality of life, most
evident in the varying uses of Narragansett Bay.
While we hope for a speedy decision on the future of Quonset and its
port, we also hope for a reasoned decision that assures we do not damage
one of our most treasured resources.
