PROVIDENCE – United Van Lines LLC says Rhode Island had the 14th highest rate of inbound migration in 2025 among its customers, with 56% of those who hired the company looking to move in and 44% looking to move out, according to the company's annual study. The recent study of the 48 contiguous states and Washington, D.C., sets rankings based on the company’s data on inbound and outbound percentages of total moves in each state. United classifies states as “high inbound” if 55% or more of the moves were going into a state, “high outbound” if 55% or more moves were out of a state or “balanced” if the difference between inbound and outbound is negligible. Each move was placed into one of six categories based on the reason for the relocation: retirement, health, family, lifestyle, job and cost. Overall, United recorded a total of 601 moves involving Rhode Island, with 337 of them (56.07%) being inbound and 264 (44%) outbound. United’s data showed 40.6% of those who moved to Rhode Island did so because of their job, and 15.6% did it because of lifestyle. Family was 12.5%, retirement was 9.4% and health was 6.3%. No moves into the state were made because of cost, according to the report. Oregon had the highest rate of inbound moves of any state at 64.5% of 1,842 total shipments. Of those that moved to Oregon, job led the reason for relocating at 36.1%, followed by family at 25.10%. However, for the seventh consecutive year, the study found New Jersey had the highest rate of outbound moves at 62.3% of 1,989 shipments. The top motivation for moving out of the state was driven primarily because of a job at 33%. Massachusetts was ranked seventh for the percentage of outbound moves, with 54.67% of United’s 1,714 shipments. Data showed 31.9% moved out of Massachusetts because of their job, while another 27.5% left because of family reasons. Lifestyle was 10.6% The full report can be found here.
